This article is Part 2 in our two-part series on why it's important to digitize your physical media.

We ended Part 1 discussing how all physical media degrades over time. The more it’s played, the more it degrades. And here’s the other thing: even if you aren’t playing, watching, or listening to it, it will still degrade over time.

This isn't something a lot of people consider, but if your memories were captured and "saved" in the form of physical photographs, slides or VHS, it unfortunately does not mean they will last forever.

Here’s the important thing to remember: any media that is “analog” or “physical” - meaning you can actually hold the media in your hand (such as a VHS tape, a printed photograph, film slides, etc.) is going to degrade over time.

Yes, you heard that right and it’s not an old wives tale (anyone remember their mom yelling, “The more you play with that, the faster it’s gonna break!”) That’s actually true when you’re playing a song on an analog piece of media like a CD or record.

We’ll say this again because it’s worth repeating:

Golden Triangle marks 70 years of capturing, preserving Tampa Bay's memories

TAMPA, Fla. — This year marks seven decades in business for Golden Triangle, a family-run enterprise that's had to change along with the times. Watch the full segment!

"We've gone from providing supplies and equipment to the local schools and the developing studios to helping lawyers with court cases — we used to blow up a lot of images for lawsuits," said owner Kelly Winterling, who took over the business from Sam Sellers, Jr. last year.

"We then developed film for many years. Sam remembers when there used to be a line around the building in the morning for people dropping off their photos, and then in the afternoon, there'd be a line with everybody picking up their photos."

"When times changed with cell phones and digital photos, we had to change to offering more services, like converting the old media and restoring photos."

The business was founded by Sam Sellers, Sr. in 1953 as a camera and supply store. His son, a lifelong friend of Winterling's father, became owner in 1998. Winterling's path to getting involved began after she took a darkroom class while a student at the University of Tampa.

"That's really when I fell in love with photography, and Sam and Golden Triangle sold me my first camera and helped me in the darkroom and learning how to develop film," she said.

But photography wasn't the first stop on Winterling's career path. She started out in senior housing.

"Which I know seems totally not anything to do with this, but that's really, I think, where I got my passion for helping people," Winterling said.

It was there she began interviewing residents about their life stories.

"I really have a passion for putting people's stories behind pictures," she said. "That's where I decided that this is what I really want to do. So, Sam took me under his wing and taught me how to do the restorations and converting old pictures and slides and film."

Golden Triangle moved from its longtime location on Kennedy Boulevard last year to office space on N. Armenia Avenue. Winterling said customers have followed.

"It's kind of a niche service that we offer, and Sam Sellers Jr. and Sr. have built a good reputation of providing quality work over the last 70 years," she said. "I'm just trying to live up to their standards. I'm very thankful to be a part of something that really makes a difference in people's lives.

"I have transferred wedding tapes for people who haven't seen their wedding in over 50 years, and I have done reels for people that haven't seen their grandparents ever because they passed away before they were born. Getting to live out some of those stories now and being able to see them is very rewarding."

Your Hurricane Checklist for Photos and Tapes

When a hurricane is approaching in Florida, it's a bit like Black Friday but take out the joy.

People are frantically buying up cases of water, even though they don't drink water on a regular day, or loading up on staple items and paper goods, storage bins, and plywood. Prepping can be stressful because it's usually last minute.

Because of our last minute preparations, our old photos and VHS tapes are usually the last thing we think about, but probably what we would miss most if lost in a storm. Well, what if you didn't have to worry about them? What if they were all digital and always protected? That would be nice, right?

Things we can digitize: Old photos, new photos, VHS tapes, Cassette tapes. We can also use negatives to develop and digitize photos as well. You just bring them to us, and we handle the rest.

But... if they aren't digital and you don't want to have them digitized yet, there are some ways to keep them protected.

Storage Bins-

Heavy duty, airtight storage bins come in different sizes. They can be pricey as well, though Costco and Sams are reasonable. These are great for storing photos and tapes. Be sure not to over pack them since you need to be able to pick them up. You may even put a large garbage bag in the bin and then place your items in for extra protection.

Ziploc Bags-

If you have lots of time, you can put your photos or tapes in gallon size bags. But if you have a lot of photos, you will end up with a lot of bags. If you are in an evacuation area, It would be beneficial to pick out a handful that you find most valuable and place them in the ziploc, like you would with important documents, while the rest go in a heavy duty bin to stay behind.

Duct Tape-

For extra security, you can duct tape the openings of the bins or ziploc bags. Be aware that heat can make duct tape more sticky and difficult to pull away.

Storing these in your garage or attic temporarily during Hurricanes won't ensue too much, if any damage, but be sure to take them out when it's safe to and continue keeping them in cool, dark places.

In short, digitizing will eliminate last minute stress, and long term damage to photos.

The Heat is One: Storing Your Photos in the Hot Months

Living in Florida, we know heat. Yes, the sunshine is beautiful, and we get to have more perfect days than the rest of the country. But that wonderful sunshine and extreme warmth have a dark side. It can destroy anything from furniture to photos if they aren’t properly prepared for it.

Growing up in Florida, a lot of us have learned to bake cookies and cake on foil outside. It doesn’t take long. That’s how hot it can get. Now imagine not being outside where there is wind and air flow. Imagine being in a closed-up garage, or better yet, a closed-up bag, inside a closed-up box, inside a closed-up garage or attic!

Things melt and are oftentimes destroyed forever.

So, when we want to preserve photo memories for a long time, we have to make sure we are storing them properly. Here are a few simple but very important tips for where and how to store your photos.

The 3 main considerations are HUMIDITY , TEMPERATURE AND LIGHT .

Humidity - any place over 65% humidity will encourage mold growth and will also make photos stick together. On average, Florida stays around 74% humidity. Our driest, least humid month is still up at 60%.

Temperature - lower temps are best since they discourage bugs, but a consistent temp of around 75 degrees or less is ideal.

Light - Extended time in bright places will cause photos to fade with time. Darkness keeps the ink preserved in the photo paper and will keep the photo’s colors vibrant.

So, where and how do we accomplish this? Here are some ideas:

What to store photos in…

Where to store your photos…

A climate-controlled area such as an inside closet or climate-controlled storage unit. Some people have a climate-controlled attic which works too. Anywhere that is 75 degrees or less and less then 65% humidity, and little to no light.

Anytime. The sooner the better. Especially if the above conditions are too challenging to store your current photos safely. Once they are digital, you have them forever.

1. Who was your biggest role model growing up? Why?

My mom, though I didn’t realize this until I grew up and had children of my own. She truly was a saint raising triplets with such grace and patience. I have not only learned how to raise my children from her but how to love and respect my husband as well. She is my hero!

2. What do you enjoy doing for fun when not restoring people's memories?

I love spending time with my family and friends on the Weeki Wachee river. I enjoy my fellowship with girlfriends at Community Bible Study. Also, fun fact, I raise tortoises and at the moment have 4 adults, 9 babies and 3 eggs getting ready to hatch.

3. What do you love most about your job?

I am very thankful that I can say- I not only love what I do; I do what I love. Knowing that I am helping people preserve and restore special memories and moments in time is very rewarding and fulfilling.

If you are like a lot of American families, someone, somewhere has the bin or box(es) of treasured VHS videos, cassette tapes holding those favorite mixes, and the negatives of pictures already developed. And now, we can even add CD’s and DVDs to the collection since almost everything is digital these days.

Maybe some of those VHS’s or Cassettes have a loved one who has left this world, or the sounds of baby’s voices recorded on tape. The joy of being able to go back and watch or listen to these irreplaceable moments just about tops everything. But in many cases, these things are destroyed simply because of how and where we have tucked them away. Sometimes they can be repaired. Sometimes not. So, it’s best to start as soon as possible to store them in a way that will preserve them as long as possible.

Here are 3 helpful tips when storing VHS tapes, Cassette Tapes, Film, CD’s, or DVD’s:

Weather-Proof Storage Containers-

A box in the garage, basement or attic is probably where they are right now, right? Sadly, this can and will harm the tapes for multiple reasons. Heat, extreme cold, darkness and humidity are a few examples, unless your attic is insulated.

A weather-proof tub with a sealable lid will keep out the heat, moisture, dust, and any small multi-legged critters from getting in.

A great place to keep the bin would be in a closet or under the bed.

Be Kind. Rewind-

As it turns out, this is not just for the next person to rent at Blockbuster. It’s because the tape can sag if it hasn’t been rewound.

When you rewind the tape, it keeps it nice and tight so that there is no tearing or crinkling, and so that you can rewatch it again and again.

Upright is Best-

When storing tapes in a bin, it is first best to make sure they have a sleeve or case. If the sleeve or case has been lost, a piece of paper folded could do the trick to prevent air exposure to the insides. Secondly, storing the tapes upright will keep pressure off of them. And direct light and heat could damage the tapes film by warping it and fading.

You will also want to avoid storing them near any type of magnetic field, such as loudspeakers, surge protectors or high-voltage power lines. These can actually erase the contents of the tapes.

And if storing these tapes safely is not an option, digitizing is! It definitely saves your space and preserves the memories far longer and it would be ideal to do it sooner than later. A lot of the content stored on a VHS, Cassette or film negative will lose clarity and vibrancy every day it sits there.
